How to Post Images with a website

If you have a personal website you can post images to, then you have the ability to show your images here in the forum inside a text message.

You need to follow these steps.

  • 1. put your image on your webspace (does not need to be in an HTML page)
I have a folder on my website that no webpage uses call "forumpicts"
I FTP an image to the folder that I want to use in the forum.
I now take notice of the path to that image, which looks something like....
    "www. mydomain. com/forumpicts/mypicture.jpg"
  • 2. I now log into the forum and create or reply to a message thread.
when I want to display my image I type in this...
    [ img] www. mydomain. com/forumpicts/mypicture.jpg [ /img]
which is the path to my image surrounded by the TAGS [ img]...[ /img]
I had to place some extra 'spaces' in the TAGS and the WWW path so it would displace here.
You would not have those extra spaces.
  • 3. That's it, post the message, your image now displays inside you text.
How to Post Images without a website

If you DON'T have a personal webspace (places like Flickr, yahoo Photos, etc don't work)
This is geared to the member who does not have a personal web space and can't upload images here to the forum.

This will be long and to many of you very confusing, but once you get this to work getting your images in the forum is a snap. There's many people here to help besides waiting for me.
Alan G., Drew J., Diane M., Howard B., Butch C. Marilyn B., Dave H., Jerry M. Janet G. can all help you get going I'm sure.

FTP images to the forum through the use of the SRPS website.
(you cannot hurt the website, its isolated from this forum space)

I have turned off attachments because they are a pain to administer and expensive for the service it offers.

This means to post an image to the forum, you need a web-space/web-site of your own.

We already have a club website that we can use for this purpose for those that don't have a personal space.

This is just a place to store an image for use on the forum, this is not a space for you to store your images or to make a website. This image will not appear on the open web or on any web page, only our closed forum.

I have a couple important requests first, because the space is limited.

  • 1. If you have a website now, PLEASE don't use this space. Leave this space for the club members that don't have a current place to store images on line for use on the forum.
  • 2. This is a semi-private space, respect the other images already there. Only SRPS members have this login information, so its private to the public, but privatein that only club members can get into the forum.
  • 3. DO NOT copy over an existing image/filename. If when you are moving a file, and a warning appears asking if you want to "Replace the existing file..." SAY NO, cancel, and rename your image before trying it again.
  • If we all use the name Trees.jpg, that's not going to work. maybe include your initials, the date, etc...
  • If you answer yes to replace, and its not one of your images, you will delete someone else's image they are using in one of their posts. Not good. I recommend you place your 3 initials in front of the image name: example - gag-myfilename.jpg (gag are my initials)
  • 4. try to keep your images a normal size. go no bigger then lets say 800-900 wide, use JPG, use medium compression (60-70) We will someday fill our alloted space on our website. Lets push that date out as far as we can.

Here's the steps to FTP an image to the SRPS space, and use that in a forum post.

  • 1. get a FTP program (like CuteFTP on a PC, Transmit on a MAC)
  • 2. set up a connection,
to get the preference settings either log into the forum, or email me.
I'm not going to print them to the public.

----------

you now will have a split screen window where on one side is your computer list
and the other side the SRPS space.

  • 3. Select your image from your hard drive side, and "transfer" it to the SRPS side.
Now it can be used in the forum page.
  • 4. How to use the image in a forum post.
Make a new thread, or reply to an existing one.
  • 5. where you want your image to appear, use this code. (I suggest copy and paste)

***************************

This is important, you mist REMOVE the 2 *'s I used in the code above for it to work.
I have to put those in here so you can see the code, if I didn't it would try to display a image.
ALSO
you need to change the "myfilename.jpg" to what every you called your file.

I know this is a mess, it is what it is, its how you FTP a file to a website.
I can't change that. Many of us here on the forum know how to do this, just ask for help.

so here's what you do in a quick recap

get a FTP program

set up FTP program with the..
(get prefs on the forum)

Name your filename so its wont replace an existing file, use a unique name or initials.

Copy the file to the SRPS space

Now in your forum post, add this line where you want your image to appear.

[img*]www.santarosaphotographicsociety.org/srpsmember/myfilename.jpg[/img*]

removing the 2 *'s and changing the name "myfilename" to what you have as a filename.

you're done.

This service is already being paid by the club, please respect the space by not using it if you already have a web space to use (most of us already are).
This is for the people that used to use the ATTACHMENTS, or don't have a place to upload their images now. (no website)

One question I'll answer now.....

"But everyone can see my file when they log into the FTP program, is that safe?"
Yes, its the same file they would get if they right-clicked on the forum post image.
So respect it, and just leave other files there alone.
If you want a copy, just do like the rest of us do, and right click and save as...
